YOGA THERAPY & SOMATIC HEALING · KELOWNA, BC

Yoga Therapy

Trauma doesn't only live in your mind. It lives in your body.

Clinically-trained yoga therapy for trauma recovery where somatic science, nervous system healing, and mindful movement meet evidence-based care.

You may have done the talking. You may have named the thing, traced it back, understood it intellectually,  and still felt it living somewhere in your chest, your jaw, your gut. That’s not a failure of therapy. That’s the body holding what words alone can’t reach.

Yoga therapy at Renew is not a fitness class, and it is not spiritual bypassing. It is a clinically grounded, trauma-informed therapeutic modality delivered by a counsellor with advanced training in somatic psychology, polyvagal theory, and the neuroscience of trauma recovery. We use the body as a doorway into the deeper healing work, always held within the safety of a mental health framework.

Yoga Therapy

“The body remembers what the mind has tried to protect you from. Yoga therapy creates a safe path back,  gently, at your pace, with your nervous system leading the way.”

What makes this different from a yoga class

This is not

This is

Why the body is central to trauma recovery

Trauma is not just a memory,  it is a physiological state. When the nervous system experiences something overwhelming, it stores that experience as sensation, tension, and dysregulation in the body. Traditional talk therapy reaches the cortex, the thinking brain. But trauma lives deeper: in the brainstem, the limbic system, the vagus nerve.

Yoga therapy works with polyvagal theory, the science of how our nervous system moves between states of safety, fight-or-flight, and freeze to gently guide clients back toward regulation. Through breathwork, mindful movement, grounding, and somatic awareness, we help the body learn that it is safe again. Not as a concept. As a felt experience.

Combined with neuroplasticity practices including heart rate variability work, vagal nerve stimulation, and bilateral movement, this approach creates lasting change in how the nervous system responds to stress, relationships, and the echoes of the past.

A Real Life Scene

Amanda had not done yoga for years. Months of nervousness, sunshine and stress resulted in anxious anticipation of unforeseen events, and a friendsterly recommended yoga therapy. She was afraid of being judged or overworked, and she felt nervous. However, the facility at Renew was peaceful, very warm, and quiet. No mirrors. No pressure. Only dim light and a voice telling you, You are safe here.
Things began with easy breathing. Her shoulders lost a bit. Then a held posture. None but calm. She cried, and nobody hurried her. She experienced something that she had not felt a long time ago by the end of the story, namely, her body, breath, and a brief moment of tranquillity.
It did not represent a great innovation. Yet it was a starting-point.

Frequently Asked Questions

By no means. Yoga therapy is easy and completely adjusted according to you. And you need not have any knowledge of yoga. Our attention is on the emotions, not on the motions. It is a healing place, not a performance place.

The goal of yoga therapy is not fitness nor flow; rather, it is emotional and physical healing. It is the individual or group work dedicated to relaxation of your nervous system; it is about relieving stress, finding the integrity with your body in a way that is safe and supported.

Yes. Numerous patients seek yoga treatment to get rid of anxiety, trauma, or emotional overload. The rituals will make you feel balanced, secure, and more active with your body and your breathing, step by step.

It takes place in quiet, instructive, and individual sessions. We move in a soft way, work with the breath, rest in poses and remain still. No one is in a hurry, no one is under pressure. You go as fast or as slow as you like, and you have time to stop, meditate, and be in your skin.

It is okay to do that. We can express emotions if we take our time to tune in. It is not a shame or judgmental, but a supportive thing. Should you require a break, want to talk or even change the course, we shall listen to you with love and understanding.

Each one has their path. Clients experience some visible differences after a couple of sessions, whereas some take weeks or months. We will collaborate to determine the best pace and rhythm that suits you.

Yes. And we customize all of it to the requirements of your body. Regardless of whether you cope with pain, fatigue or an illness, our methods do not deplete your energy when you need it most. The classes are gentle, rejuvenating and based on how you feel that particular day.

The beauty of yoga therapy is its beautiful add-on to counselling, which it cannot substitute. Although talk therapy allows one to think and work through their emotions, yoga therapy is what makes you feel and get out the feelings held in the body. Combined, they facilitate total-person healing.

Put on relaxed and easy-to-move clothes. No equipment required. We supply all the rest, blankets, mats and props. Bring whatever you want, including yourself and a water bottle, perhaps.

Absolutely. This is your domain. When you want quiet, we respect your wishes. When you want to talk, we will give space to that as well. The experience is always in your control. No obligation, no requirements.
